Hello, I’m Sara
When I started along the path to become a therapist, my mission was to save the day by giving great advice and providing brilliant solutions to people who were in pain and struggle. I thought I had all the answers. My intentions were loving, but so twisted and backwards. I quickly came to an understanding that I don’t have any of the answers! I’m not the expert on your life. YOU are. My biggest job is to accept and love you exactly as you are, every time you walk in for session. I promise to extend empathy, hold you accountable and stay actively curious. I know you have a story to tell. Every human does. I want to hear it.
Psychotherapy is so much more than talking. In fact, we now know that traditional talk therapy (which is cognition-based) only scratches the surface of healing. Trauma and difficult past experiences live in our mind, emotions, and throughout our body and nervous system. They manifest in our automatic reactions, in our dispositions and in how we interpret the world around us. They color our beliefs about ourselves and other people, and they influence the decisions we make.
Coping skills, solutions-focused work and communication tactics are, of course, important. But if that’s as far as you take your therapeutic work, you will only cut the weeds off above the dirt. The kind of work that I specialize in focuses on identifying and tending to the roots of the weeds. This work is deep and life changing. It is a process of integration, meaning making and change creation. We are chasing the kind of healing that helps you remember who you are. The ultimate goal is a sincere sense of feeling more like yourself.
I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), a powerful therapeutic tool that can be utilized for many issues including anxiety, trauma, addiction, eating disorder, anger issues and disturbing thoughts and memories. (A great website to reference for more information on this modality is EMDRIA.org.)
I am also trained in Internal Family Systems (IFS), another incredibly strong and evidence-based practice. As a clinical treatment, IFS has been rated effective for improving general functioning and well-being by working with multiplicity of personality combined with systems thinking. (For more information on IFS, check out IFS-institute.com.)
I finished my Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology in 2002 at the University of Kansas. My Masters degree work was completed in the CACREP accredited Counseling Psychology program at Colorado Christian University in 2013. My graduate experience at CCU helped me to value and understand the integration of science and spirituality. I do not, however, identify as a “Christian counselor”. My approaches and services (along with those of our entire staff at Red Rocks Counseling) are LGBTQ+ friendly. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Colorado.
I work with teenagers (ages 14+), adults and couples. About 70% of my adult client docket tends to consist of medical professionals, finance folks, attorneys and C-level executives. Psychotherapy at RRC is not a passive process. It involves a great deal of initiative and intention on the client’s part. I do my best work with individuals who are highly motivated for change, healing and personal evolution. Because every client has unique experiences and needs, our treatment plans are never “one-size-fits-all“. We will customize your process to help you overcome struggle, create transformation and curate a life of greater alignment, wellness and hope.
